The 2019 MLB trade deadline gets closer and closer. As teams study their next move in the trade market, we will now look at what the other league might have in mind. Here’s what every NL contender needs ahead of the 2019 MLB trade deadline.
Atlanta Braves: The Battle For Stroman
The Atlanta Braves are out of luck. They are in Madison Bumgarner’s no-trade list alongside the Yankees and a few other teams. This forces the Braves to implement “Plan B”. That would be a tricky operation.
Marcus Stroman could also be on their radar. Problem is, they would have to fight for him against the Yankees, as New York could also be in the hunt for him. He would be a nice addition to a team that already landed Dallas Keuchel earlier in the year. Stroman could be a valuable weapon for them out of the bullpen as well.
Washington Nationals: Get A Closer
Washington has sneaked up in the race for the Wild Card spot in a way not even they expected. They fall short in comparison to other contenders such as Atlanta or Los Angeles. If they want to make it, they will have to freshen things up a bit in their roster. They will have to do it on a budget, according to GM Mike Rizzo.
The Giants’ Sam Dyson would be a good choice, but it’s impossible to know how far San Francisco will be willing to sell as they are also in the Wild Card race. Shane Greene would fit in a bullpen that could use help.
Detroit’s righty has a 1.22 ERA over 37 appearances on the mound alongside 41 strikeouts and 22 saves. Their only challenge would be putting up a good trade package for the Tigers.
Philadelphia Phillies: Trade For The Bad Guy
The Phillies are just one game behind the Nationals and are fighting for the Wild Card despite not having the performance most people expected. Landing Trevor Bauer would be nice as their rotation could use some reinforcements. However, that would involve battling with other teams and things could go sour for them. Philadelphia has a much easier trade to make if they’re smart.
Philly could make use of a bizarre event at Comerica Park. Third baseman and right fielder Nicholas Castellanos ripped his own ballpark a few days ago. The 27-year-old called the park “a joke,” and has cemented his trade chip status even more after his comments.
Castellanos has 11 homers, 37 RBI, and a .483 slugging percentage this season. He could find a more hitter-friendly park if the Phillies trade for him ahead of the 2019 MLB trade deadline.
