Kansas City suffered through one of the worst seasons in franchise history just three years after winning the World Series. Their 104 losses was 22 more than the previous season. The Royals went 7-36 between June 1 and the All Star Break. And that was after a 5-20 start.
The Royals had the fourth worst on base percentage in the American League, which led to the third fewest runs scored. They traded Mike Moustakas and Lucas Duda before the trade deadline. Salvador Perez was the only power threat left by the end of the season.
The pitching staff was even worse. They finished with the second highest ERA, second fewest strikeouts, and had the second fewest saves. Jakob Junis had the most wins with a 9-12 record. Wily Peralta was converted to a closer and converted all 14 of his save opportunities.
